CHAPTER 5

About the Survey Said Survey Files

Survey Said creates a variety of different files. These files have specific file extensions which indicate what type of data is contained within the file.

When a new survey is created, the Survey Creator creates a file that contains the questions for the survey, the survey options and any categories that get defined. This file receives the name the administrator gives it. The Survey Creator then appends the name with a file extension of SDB. The Survey Creator will also create a TDB file with the file name the administrator specified if the survey contains any single choice, multiple choice, or dual scale questions with "Other" defined for textual answers or Ranking, Multi-Field or Open Ended, type questions or if Comments are enabled, then a file with a TDB file extension will also be created.

The first time a survey is answered, the survey respondent module creates a file with the name of the survey and gives it a file extension of .RDB. This file will always exist after a survey has been answered at least once.

A survey database is comprised of the following files;

filename.SDB (Always Exists - Contains questions & options)

filename.RDB (Created upon being answered the first time)

filename.TDB (Contains all typed in character responses)

These files MUST be kept together, because they reference information within each other. Furthermore, they must all be in the same directory when a respondent is answering the survey and/or the administrator analyzing the survey.

Putting a Survey Into Production

For survey environments using the PC LAN Respondent, the Network Entry Station, or the Standalone Respondent, the files making up a survey can be moved from the administrator's working directory to the "producton directory" or the working directory that the respondent software uses. The SDB, RDB and TDB files that make up a specific survey must be moved together. Multiple copies of a survey can be distributed on standalone PCs and consolidated into a single survey database upon completion, by using the Survey Analyzer program to Import A Survey File.
